Artist Statement

This piece is constructed of welded aluminum. It represents a tricone drill bit that is used in drilling for oil. It was invented by Howard Hughes Sr. and has helped to fuel the American dream. In 2010, similar drill bits helped to save the lives of 33 miners in Chile. They also drilled the well that contributed to the Gulf Oil disaster, and they are used in fracking. The same bits can also be used to drill ever deeper wells to tap pollution free geothermal energy. The drill bit is only a tool. It is how we use it that is crucial.
